Direct-to-chip cooling, also known as direct-to-plate cooling, cold plate cooling, or direct chip cooling, is a type of liquid cooling where tubes deliver liquid coolant straight to the chip of a server. The coolant absorbs the heat which is then circulated to a cooling device or heat exchange. Direct-to-chip cooling is one of the most efficient data center cooling techniques, and is particularly useful for high-density deployments.
What are the Benefits of Direct-to-Chip Cooling?
The key benefits of direct-to-chip cooling include:
- Reliability and performance. Traditional air cooling methods cannot keep up with the massive amounts of heat generated by modern data center equipment. Direct-to-chip cooling, however, can conduct heat better than air and allow for higher rack densities.
- Sustainability. Though the name can be misleading, liquid cooling actually uses less water than many air cooling methods. Direct-to-chip cooling can improve Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) and reduce energy consumption for a greener data center.
- Improved data centers. Mechanical cooling methods can be bulky, noisy, and take a toll on data center equipment. Direct-to-chip cooling can accommodate higher rack densities and meet modern workload demands without the need for loud cooling fans and pumps.
Monitor and Manage High-Density Racks with DCIM Software
High-density racks pose a challenge when it comes to management and cooling.
However, there is a solution in the form of Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) software. DCIM simplifies high-density rack management and allows for intelligent increases in rack density without risking downtime.
With DCIM, you can quickly detect and resolve hot spots, set power and environmental thresholds and alerts, automate power capacity planning to find stranded capacity, get holistic views of site health and capacity, document all physical cabling infrastructure, and more.
