A switched power distribution unit (PDU) is a type of intelligent rack PDU that allows for turning individual outlets or groups of outlets on the PDU on and off. With a switched PDU, devices can be power controlled remotely and in a specific order. It also allows for delayed power sequences so that there is no inrush of power, increasing the lifespan of the devices.
Switched PDUs are crucial in a remote deployment as they allow the user to restore services by rebooting servers without having to make a physical visit to the data center site. They can also help save energy and reduce costs by enabling the user to switch off devices that are not currently in use. In the event of a mains power supply failure, non-essential loads can be disconnected so UPS runtime is maximized.
Switched PDUs with outlet metering help users monitor levels of power usage and available capacity. Actual power consumption at the device level can easily be understood to allow for comparison of efficiencies, improved capacity planning, increased utilization of existing resources, and to allocate costs to specific customers or business units.
Switched PDU Monitoring with DCIM Software
Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) software is often used to enhance many of the features and capabilities available with switched and other intelligent PDUs in an integrated, single pane of glass interface. Data collected from intelligent PDUs is automatically turned into actionable information via business intelligence dashboards and visual analytics. Remote management and power actions, bulk firmware updates, cloning configurations, and restoring from backups can all be accomplished through the same UI.
