U position is the precise location in a server cabinet where an asset resides. For example, in a standard 42U cabinet, a 1U server placed at the bottom of the rack would be in the 1st U position and a 2U server in the middle of the rack would be located in the 20th and 21st U positions.
Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) software is used by data center managers to track the detailed location of data center assets down to the U position. This makes it easy to instantly visualize what assets you have, who owns them, and where they are located, to quickly search for assets, and to provide detailed instructions to technicians so moves, adds, and changes are done accurately and quickly.
